Parents Who Assimilated A White Life... Second Generation Kids At Risk Or Doomed?

In American people sometimes have to go through changes such as assimilating a whole life. Assimilating white life means taking action or changing one's identity to fit in with another group. People from a non-dominant group such as the Latino and black community where we are constantly discriminated and neglected by our domains counterparts. Assimilating a white or better life can be beneficial too because you are becoming a better person. I went through the same action leaving most of my Hispanic culture and habits to become better in school. As so did my parents due to the community we lived in. We needed to do this in order to survive in the condition we lived in. Just my situation this is happening all over and these situations can have positive or negative effects on the second generation.

When people white pass they go through a series of changes. These changes can have a negative effect on future generations to come such as children being part of criminal activity and violence.  According to the research done by Mary Waters, seems that people of the younger second generation of parents that assimilated a white life tend to be a failure in life. These failures including being high school dropouts, drug addicts,  and frequent jail visits.

As mentioned people whom white pass may have negative effects, they can also have positive effects on the second generation of children. This positive effects can even cause the second generation children to assimilate a better life just as their parents did to surpass them. By surpassing them they become more financially stable and successful than their parents.his matters because the second generation is not focused on immigrant jobs like their parents. They are looking for a better future to not end up at the other second generation, failures, and criminals. Seeing what others can do assimilating a better life as their parents serve as motivations not allowing the second generation to fall like some other second-generation kids who’s parents assimilated a white life. This can be seen as the second generation of kids being more fluent in English than their native language. Only mainly due to the fact that most American schools speak only English.

Assimilating a white life can bring much discrimination to the second generation that follows. These younger generation kids are not all accepted in the society they are around. Skin color, race, and whom people associate themselves can all play factors in rejection in the society they live in.This was said because of the second generation of white passing parents. People see them as a fake towards a race. This can be seen as an example when an African American child of white passing parents with dark skin tries to fit in with the white children. In James Johnson book “ The Autobiography Of An Ex-Colored Man” he mentioned an incident with the school that he went to.

In conclusion, parents who assimilated a white life made positive and negative effects on the second generation of children. The effects came in positive form with the second generation making a successful decision that allowed them to surpass their parents by assimilated some sort of a better life just like their parents. But as well coming with negative effects such as receiving scrimination from others and not being accepted in society. These are changes that need to be aspected in today's society.
