social standards in America. Having to always fit the standards of Americans and never being
accepted for who they truly are and their cultural difference. The process of fitting into the social
standards of the white American culture has always been a difficult decision for those who have
assimilated although the privilege of social and economical are very high and life changing.
In today's society, we see these high standards still in place. Generations are taught at a young
age either by personal experience or observation. People of color have always been placed below the
culture, This makes it an economical and social issue for the people of color. They are unable to
express who they are and are pressure to assimilate to those into the white American culture.
In America you can see how many white Americans are trying to have those people that are from
different cultures and speak different languages only speak English. In fact, many Americans in
today's society hope to remove other languages in the country and have English as the main language
only. This shows the white dominant culture selfishly wants others who are different to live up to
their demands and standards. Those who choose to assimilate to the white culture are praised by
white Americans for joining them in their belief and powerness. Therefore, the change in the way
people of color are seen and spoken to by the whites gives them a higher social stand on the level
above other people of color but still below white people.
The pressure of assimilation for the people of color was causing them to see this as their only
way of survival because of the economical benefits gained. Those who assimilated where
immediately given economical stability for both them and their family. This way in an indirect way a
a form of getting the people of color to join the white culture and get the people of color to make the
white culture more powerful to then pressure the minority groups into fitting the white social
standards. Making the white dominant American culture powerful against other racial groups below
them.
The white American culture gave the minority people of color social and economical stability for
their assimilation. Due to the pressure that people of color have faced in trying to conform to the
white standards placed on them, they have been conditioned to erase their true identity in order to
survive.
