Cultural appropriation is a modern topic, it is the act of using things or acting a cultural that you are not a part of, especially without showing respect for the culture. This issue has an effect on millennials that are not African American. Most of the time cultural appropriation takes place within the African American culture.
Over time I have witnessed on social media that several millennials, for example there is a Malu Trevejo, she is popular singer and dancer on Instagram who doesn't see the issue with her wearing "box braids" which is an African American protective style that is a huge part of the African American culture, she feels that it isn't disrespectful to wear that hairstyle. She received a lot of backlash in her comments and then she made it known that it shouldn't be an issue to wear any hairstyle. The issue is not her wearing the hairstyle, but the fact that her wearing the hairstyle is disrespectful do the culture. In society people are not used to seeing people outside of the African American race wearing or acting as something that they are not. Another example of cultural appropriation, is another popular Instagramer named Vicky, a white girl that believed at one point that she was black, because she was mixed with 25%. this is one reason why cultural appropriation is a major issue in 2018, the fact that she felt that she was allowed to say the N-word because she was mixed with a low percentage of African American. Vicky has made videos expressing how she felt about people giving her crap about the way she acts and how she talks and how she represents herself in social media.
in this day in age we also have cultural appropriation in music. In the music industry we have white rappers, and artist that show a little of cultural appropriation. Miley Cryus for example, she went through a phase in her music career, where she expressed African American tendencies. She had a grill and she started wearing Jordans, and she was dating an African American producer Mike- Will- Made- It. Recently in an interview she made it known that the music isn't bad, but she couldn't handle being in that scene anymore, that it was " too much Lamborghini" and too much " suck my d*ck". People were, saying how she wore hiphop as a costume. The caused controversy because she was showing how African American music culture, when that is not how it seems.
